{"id":610,"date":"2012-04-25T04:18:33","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T04:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/?p=610"},"modified":"2016-05-18T20:17:30","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T20:17:30","slug":"groundbreaking-eu-study-supports-use-of-heroin-assisted-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.drugpolicy.ca\/fr\/groundbreaking-eu-study-supports-use-of-heroin-assisted-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Groundbreaking EU study supports use of heroin-assisted treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Friday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emcdda.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\">European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction<\/a> (EMCDDA ) released a groundbreaking report examining heroin-assisted treatment for chronic heroin users, once thought to be untreatable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-611\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-611 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/heroin.jpg\" alt=\"heroin\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Jay Black<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The report, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emcdda.europa.eu\/publications\/insights\/heroin-assisted-treatment\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>New heroin-assisted treatment<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>,<\/em> provides the first state-of-the-art overview of research, examining the latest evidence and clinical experience on the topic in Europe and internationally. The findings show that for the small minority of entrenched opioid users who repeatedly fail to respond to prescriptions of other substitute drugs such as methadone, supervised use of medicinal heroin can be an effective second-line treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s findings show that Supervised Injectable Heroin (SIH) treatment can lead to: the \u2018substantially improved\u2019 health and well-being of this group; \u2018major reductions\u2019 in their continued use of illicit \u2018street\u2019 heroin; \u2018major disengagement from criminal activities\u2019, such as acquisitive crime to fund their drug use and \u2018marked improvements in social functioning\u2019 (e.g. stable housing, higher employment rate).<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018New heroin-assisted treatment is an issue that has attracted much attention, controversy and often confusion\u2019, says EMCDDA Director Wolfgang G\u00f6tz. \u2018With Europe at the forefront of investigating and implementing this novel approach, the EMCDDA is proud to present the findings of the major contemporary research studies on the topic and the clinical and policy experiences of countries providing it. Our purpose in doing this is not to advocate, but to inform.
