For some, this may seem like an extreme proposition, but as the history of drug policy in Canada and globally has shown, <strong>the criminalization of drugs\u2014and millions poured into police budgets to enforce associated laws\u2014have fueled some of the greatest harms to society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sandy.m.hudson\/videos\/10107688383554802\/?__tn__=-R\" target=\"_blank\">This interview<\/a> by Black Lives Matter Toronto co-founder, Sandy Hudson, articulates the clear logic around defunding police and what that means: <strong>reallocated funds more intelligently and eliminating from police control those roles they are now performing that cause serious community-level harm, and getting other more capable organizations to carry out those activities.<\/strong> Social development is key to creating healthier and safer communities. There is a mountain of evidence showing that criminalizing people who use drugs is extremely harmful. Currently amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the criminalization of drugs forces people to consume substances in isolation and engage in survival strategies that increase their risk of fatal overdose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The millions we spend on criminalizing drug use could instead be funnelled into harm reduction and drug treatment programs that have been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31166621\/\" target=\"_blank\">proven to save lives<\/a> and build community, rather than fuel harm. Police themselves have said that they \u201ccannot arrest their way out of the overdose crisis.\u201d The cost in taxpayer dollars, but more importantly human lives, could be reduced by moving away from policing in this area as has been done in other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1689\" height=\"877\" src=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/20180220_132408-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/20180220_132408-copy.jpg 1689w, https:\/\/new.drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/20180220_132408-copy-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/20180220_132408-copy-1024x532.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/new.drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/20180220_132408-copy-768x399.jpg 768w, https:\/\/new.drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/20180220_132408-copy-1536x798.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1689px) 100vw, 1689px\" \/><figcaption>(Photo credit: Peter Kim | National Day of Action on the Overdose Crisis | 2018)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BC&#8217;s chief medical health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/05\/world\/canada\/bonnie-henry-british-columbia-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently lauded for her pandemic response by the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bonnie-henry-decriminalization-report-1.5108463#:~:text=Bonnie%20Henry&amp;text=B.C.'s%20top%20health%20officer%20has%20recommended%20the%20province%20move,page%20report%20released%20Wednesday%2C%20Dr.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called for the decriminalization of drugs<\/a>. And this policy shift has been echoed by other leading health experts across Canada.
